How we use personal data

Last updated: October 2026

Who we are

Chancery Risk Associates Limited ("we", "us") is an insurance broker specialising in litigation and contingent risk. We are the controller of the personal data described in this notice. We are registered in England and Wales under company number 16740873. Our registered office is 10 Crown Street, Suite 4, Brentwood, England CM14 4BA.

If you have questions about this notice or your personal data, contact our Data Protection Lead at info@chanceryriskassociates.com or on +44 1277 549145.

Whose data we hold

  • Clients and prospective clients, including individuals and the owners and officers of corporate clients
  • Other people connected to a case, where their details appear in case papers
  • Contacts at law firms, chambers, insolvency practices, litigation funders and insurers
  • People who contact us or receive our updates
  • Job applicants

What we collect

  • Identity and contact details: name, address, email, telephone number and date of birth
  • Verification and screening information: identity documents, ownership details, and sanctions and politically exposed person checks
  • Financial information: source of funds, and information needed to arrange insurance and funding
  • Case information: details of the dispute, legal advice, evidence and costs
  • Correspondence and records of our dealings with you

Case papers can contain special category data, such as health information in a personal injury claim, or information about alleged offences. We use this only where it is necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, and we restrict access to it.

Where it comes from

We collect data from you; from your solicitor, counsel or other adviser; from litigation funders, insurers and other introducers; from identity verification and screening providers; and from public sources such as Companies House, court records and sanctions lists.

How we use it, and why we are allowed to

  • Arranging and administering insurance and funding for your case — to perform our contract with you, or to take steps you ask for before one
  • Identity checks, anti-money laundering and sanctions screening, and keeping regulatory records — to comply with our legal obligations
  • Handling complaints and insurance claims — legal obligation and our legitimate interests
  • Managing relationships with law firms, insurers, funders and other professional contacts — our legitimate interests
  • Sending updates to business contacts — our legitimate interests, or your consent where the law requires it. You can opt out at any time.
  • Recruitment — steps before a contract, and our legitimate interests

We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing. If you do not give us information we need, we may not be able to arrange insurance or funding for you.

Who we share it with

  • Insurers and underwriters we approach about your case, and their reinsurers. They act as independent controllers and have their own privacy notices.
  • Litigation funders, where funding is being arranged for your case
  • Your legal representatives and other advisers on the case
  • Service providers who support our business, such as IT and cloud hosting, identity verification and screening, bookkeeping, banking and independent compliance review. They act under contracts that require them to protect your data.
  • Regulators and authorities, including the Financial Conduct Authority, the Financial Ombudsman Service, HM Revenue & Customs and law enforcement agencies, where the law requires it
  • A buyer or successor, if our business is sold or restructured

We do not sell personal data.

International transfers

We mainly process data in the UK and the European Economic Area. If a case requires data to go elsewhere, for example to an overseas insurer, reinsurer or counsel, we use an approved safeguard such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement. Alternatively, where the transfer is necessary, we rely on the exception for legal claims.

How long we keep it

  • Client files, including case papers and policy records: six years after our relationship ends
  • Accounting and tax records: seven years
  • Complaint records: up to five years after resolution
  • Marketing preferences: while they apply, and two years after you opt out
  • Unsuccessful job applications: six months

We keep data for longer where a case or claim is still running. After that, records are securely deleted.

Keeping it secure

We protect personal data with measures suited to its sensitivity, including multi-factor authentication, encryption and secure file-sharing for case papers. Access is limited to people who need it.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you
  • have inaccurate data corrected
  • have data erased, where we are not required to keep it
  • restrict or object to our use of it, including for marketing
  • receive data you gave us in a portable format, where this applies
  • withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on it

We respond within one month, and may need to verify your identity first. Some rights are limited where the law requires us to keep records.

Concerns and complaints

If you have a concern about how we use your personal data, please contact us first and we will try to resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the UK data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
